Transfer News: Tottenham given green light to move for Houssem Aouar
According to transfer news from Calciomercato (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs that have received the green light to make a move to sign Houssem Aouar from Olympique Lyon.
Aouar came through the youth ranks at Lyon and broke into the first-team in 2016. Since then, he has been a regular presence with the senior squad gradually going onto establish himself as a constant starter for Les Gones, making over 150 appearances in which he has more than 60 direct goal contributions.
The 23-year-old featured 33 times across all competition for Lyon in the 2020/21 season, finishing with eight goals and four assists, helping the team to a top-four finish in Ligue 1.
While he continues to be held in high regard within the club, the effects of the pandemic on the finances and a botched Ligue 1 TV rights deal have meant that Lyon are now looking to cash in on Aouar in the summer transfer window. (h/t Express)
Tottenham have shown an interest in signing Aouar this summer, along with arch-rivals Arsenal. In addition, both Manchester United and Liverpool are also closely monitoring the 23-year-old Frenchman. And now, it is claimed that Lyon have given the green light to all the four clubs to make a swoop for their midfield gem.
Furthermore, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has reduced the asking price for Aouar from £50m to £25m, making him a potential bargain signing. However, the French club are hoping that the interest from the four clubs could spark a bidding war and nudge the transfer fee upwards of that figure.
