Tottenham and Arsenal in the hunt to sign Barcelona star Clement Lenglet

According to Spanish publication SPORT (h/t Daily Mail), Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal seem set to go head-to-head for the signing of Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet this summer.

A product of the AS Nancy youth setup, Lenglet rose to a regular in the first-team at the French club before securing a move to Sevilla in January 2017. Eighteen months later, during which he impressed, the 26-year-old was signed by Barcelona.

Lenglet enjoyed an impressive debut season with the Catalan giants and had a decent enough campaign in 2019/20 as well. However, he endured quite a decline in the last season. And with the club going through financial turmoil, they have decided to axe several stars including Lenglet, compatriot and defensive partner Samuel Umtiti and young right-back Sergino Dest. This has seemingly alerted Tottenham Hotspur as well as their local rivals Arsenal, with both the clubs now vying for Lenglet’s signature as per the report.

It is no secret at this point that Tottenham are in the market for defensive reinforcements. Toby Alderweireld is past his prime while both Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have not been consistent enough in recent times. With Joe Rodon lacking the experience at this level, a proven defender coming into the squad would be a smart move on the club’s part.

Whether Lenglet is the right man though remains the question. While he did well in his first couple of years at Barcelona, the 26-year-old endured a difficult season last time out. And there is a chance that he may find it hard to cope with the rough and tumble of English football as well.

Tottenham may well be better off holding out for better options.
