Tottenham in advanced talks to sign Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini
According to Football.london, Tottenham Hotspur are in advanced talks to secure the signings of Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini from Serie A side Atalanta.
Romero came through the ranks at Argentine club Belgrano and moved to Italy in January 2018, when he signed for Genoa. He was signed by Juventus in 2019, who immediately loaned him back to Genoa for the 2019/20 campaign, where he impressed again. Last season saw the Argentine sign for Atalanta on loan where he shone bright, being named the Serie A Defender of the Year.
That was followed by success in the 2021 Copa America with Argentina, which has seen Romero’s stock soar. Atalanta had the option to make his transfer permanent for €16m next summer, but they are ready to do so this year itself before selling him off a handsome profit.
Gollini started out at the academy of SPAL and spent a couple of years with the Fiorentina youth setup as well before arriving in England in 2012, signing for Manchester United. After two years with the Red Devils’ youth teams, the goalkeeper returned to Italy, signing for Hellas Verona in 2014.
Two years later, Gollini would return to England, signing for Aston Villa in 2016 but the move did not go as per plans as the shot-stopper was back in Italy just six months later, signing for Atalanta on an eighteen-month loan deal, before making the transfer permanent in 2018. Since then, he has been a regular in goal for La Dea, making 112 appearances in which he has 38 clean sheets.
Tottenham strengthening two key positions
Tottenham were looking at defensive reinforcements, with the likes of Jules Kounde and Joachim Andersen being considered. However, the report states that new sporting director Fabio Paratici is a huge admirer of Romero and is keen on adding him to the ranks. With Toby Alderweireld’s future uncertain, someone like the Argentine can prove to be a top buy for Spurs.
As for Gollini, his situation at Atalanta became uncertain after the club brought in Juan Musso this summer. With Hugo Lloris’ contract with Tottenham running out next year and Joe Hart also in the final leg of his career, Spurs needed to replenish their goalkeeping department with a younger option, making the Italian a potentially shrewd buy.
