Eric Dier and Doherty poised for Tottenham exit?

According to TalkSport (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have placed both Eric Dier and Matt Doherty for sale. The money received from the sale could well be used for bringing in Atalanta’s Cristian Romero.

Eric Dier tenure at Tottenham

Eric Dier is a graduate of Sporting CP’s academy. Coming through the ranks, Dier made his first-team debut in 2012. In August 2014, he was signed by Tottenham for £4million. The centre-back showed promise in his early years. He was even rewarded with a new 5-year deal in 2016.

Since then, he has been in and out of the starting XI. Dier was rewarded a place back when Jose Mourinho was appointed as the Spurs manager. Mourinho had his eyes on Dier even during his tenure as the Manchester United boss. Dier’s stock is at an all-time low as he was also axed from England squad for the UEFA Euro 2020.

Doherty’s disappointing spell

Spurs signed Doherty from Wolves in the summer of 2020. During 2019/20 season, Doherty played 2,840 minutes in the Premier League, providing 4 assists and 4 goals. In his debut season at Spurs, he played 1,238 minutes in the Premier League, providing 2 assists and 0 goals.

Things looked positive when his former boss Nuno Espirito Santo was appointed by Tottenham. However, it seems like Doherty’s spell at Spurs is set to end in disappointment.

On Cristian Romero

Earlier, Atalanta CEO confirmed Tottenham’s bid for their centre-back. However, he mentioned that they won’t sell until they receive the ‘right’ bid (h/t Fabrizio Romano).
