Tottenham Hotspur accept an offer for Toby Alderweireld
According to journalist Mike McGrath via The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur have accepted an offer for Toby Alderweireld from Al-Duhail. The report mentions the figure to be around £13m. The report adds the deal is subject to personal terms and medical in Qatar. It suggests the decision came from Nuno Espirito Santo’s ambition to revamp the Spurs defence.
On Toby Alderweireld
The Belgian is a product of the famous Ajax academy. Going up the ranks, he made his first-team debut for Ajax in 2008. Along with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen, Alderweireld formed a solid partnership.
Atletico Madrid signed him in 2013. Unfortunately, he never made his mark at the Spanish capital. Southampton signed him on loan in 2014.
Tottenham signed Alderweireld in the summer of 2015. He reunited with former Ajax teammate Jan Vertonghen. Both turned back the clock to their Ajax days. In 2019, former footballer Tony Gale termed the duo as the best centre-back partnership in the world.
However, in recent campaigns, Alderweireld has struggled to hold his place. The Athletic reported that the defender expressed his desire to leave the club after the Euros. The report added Ajax as a potential destination.
What it means for Tottenham
New head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is looking to revamp the defence. The likes of Eric Dier and Matt Doherty have also been linked with a move away from N17.
While Atalanta centre-back Cristian Romero has also been linked with the club by journalist Fabrizio Romano.
