Transfer News: Tottenham closing in on Cristian Romero capture

According to transfer news from the Express, Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Cristian Romero from Atalanta BC with chairman Daniel Levy approving the deal while the player is also keen on the move.

Tottenham completed their first summer signing of the Nuno Espirito Santo era earlier this week when Pierluigi Gollini arrived from Atalanta on a loan deal with an option to make the transfer permanent.

And, it seems like the club’s second signing will also hail from Atalanta only, with Romero now said to be inching closer to a move. The 23-year-old has been in Italy for close to three years, having arrived at Genoa in 2018. The centre-back joined Juventus in 2019 but spent the last two seasons on loan at Genoa and Atalanta, respectively.

The 23-year-old impressed heavily at Atalanta being named the Serie A Defender of the Year for 2020/21. While he is technically still on loan at the club for another year, Atalanta are intent on triggering the option to make his transfer permanent and then selling him on for a profit.

Once that is resolved, the finer details and the financial aspects of the transfer to Tottenham will be finalised, as per the report. It is claimed that the defender will cost Tottenham around £38.5m, with club chairman Daniel Levy having given a green light to the deal. In addition to that, Romero too is intent on completing a transfer to the north London club. (h/t Express)

With Bryan Gil also close to signing from Sevilla, things are looking up for Tottenham after a frustrating start to the summer. Romero, given how well he performed last term with Atalanta and at the Copa America with Argentina, has the potential to be a solid addition for the Lilywhites.
