Tottenham Hotspur have failed in a bid to land Manchester United forward Anthony Martial on loan.

Tottenham line up swoop for Manchester United star Anthony Martial

According to the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a swoop for Manchester United star Anthony Martial, who is set to be sold this summer by the Red Devils.

Martial has been with United since 2015, having arrived in a big-money move from AS Monaco. While the Frenchman enjoyed a stunning debut season in England, he hasn’t been able to reach the same heights consistently year after year.

The 2019/20 term seemed to be a turning point after another fine season but the forward struggled in 2020/21 before picking up an injury which meant he was not selected by France for the Euro 2020 either. Nevertheless, a talented forward who can play on the left or through the centre, Martial is a subject of interest from Tottenham.

Tottenham could do with reinforcements in attack following the departure of Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius, both of whom are back at their parent clubs following the expiry of their loan deals. With Harry Kane’s future also uncertain, adding a proven Premier League forward like Martial could prove to be a good piece of business for Tottenham.

But, as per the report, Manchester United, who are willing to sell the Frenchman after signing Jadon Sancho, will demand a transfer fee of £50m for the forward. Furthermore, Martial would be demanding massive wages of £250,000 per week, which would be another major stumbling block in a deal going through. (h/t Daily Star)

Martial, despite his struggles, remains a forward with quality and potential, while his best years are in front of him as well. Should there be a compromise arrived at on the transfer fee and wages, he can prove to be a worthy signing as given the right atmosphere, the Frenchman has what it takes to be a success.
