Tottenham Hotspur want Steven Bergwijn to stay amid Ajax interest

Italian Journalist Fabrizio Romano via his Here We Go podcast (h/t football.london) revealed the latest on the future of Tottenham Hotspur winger, Steven Bergwijn, amid transfer interest from Ajax Amsterdam. Spurs are not yet convinced about letting the player leave, according to Romano, who then added that he won’t be surprised if the player stays put.

On Steven Bergwijn

The player is a graduate of PSV’s academy. Bergwijn played for the first team in 2014. He was a prominent member of PSV’s 17/18 Eredivisie winning squad. In that campaign, he appeared 32 times for the Dutch club, scoring 8 goals and 11 assists. The player appeared 149 times for the club between 2014-2020.

Steven Bergwijn of Tottenham has been linked with Ajax.

Tottenham Hotspur signed Bergwijn in January 2020 in a £26.7m deal. The player had a dream debut for the Lilywhites where he started the game against Manchester City and scored an absolute peach of a volley from just inside the box to help Spurs to a 2-0 victory. He was awarded the man of the match for his performance, with manager Jose Mourinho saying that it is the best way for a player to come to a new club.

However, since then the player has struggled for goals and a place in starting eleven. So far, Bergwijn has only played 1.914′ minutes in the Premier League scoring 4 goals and getting 5 assists.

His poor form led him to be left out of Holland’s UEFA Euro 2020 squad.

New life under Nuno

Last month, the Daily Mail reported that Ajax will make a move for Steven Bergwijn. However, Tottenham are likely to demand £27m for the Dutch winger. The player has set his sights on being included in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, the player might end up staying at the club. Bergwijn has started all three pre-season friendlies for the club and could well have a second life under the new Portuguese manager, especially with Gareth Bale’s loan spell now over.
