Transfer News: Liverpool enter race for Spurs target Marco Asensio
Spanish publication Todo Fichajes via Caughtoffside (h/t Liverpool Echo) has mentioned Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Marco Asensio. The report believes that £34m could be enough to secure the signature of the Real Madrid winger. However, Spurs are not the only admirers of Asensio from England. The report mentions Arsenal and Liverpool as other potential buyers, with the former having shown the biggest interest out of the three clubs.
Real Madrid signed Asensio in 2014. The player made his mark in 2016 and announced himself to the stage by scoring a 25-yard strike against Sevilla in the Super cup. However, his form has not been consistent ever since. The player also isn’t the most productive in front of the goal. In his 193 appearances for Real Madrid, he has scored 37 goals and provided 22 assists.
Injuries could be another consideration from the potential buyers. In 2019, Marco Asensio suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament. The injury kept him out of most of the 19/20 season. However, the player has not suffered from any major injuries since.
While injuries were not an issue last season, his goal-scoring issue is still low. In 20/21 the Asensio made 35 appearances in the LaLiga, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists.
Should Tottenham go for Marco Asensio?
Nuno Espirito Santo and Fabio Paratici should ideally be on a hunt for a winger. Last season, Son Heung-min and Harry Kane did most of the scoring. Hence, one could rightly think that the player that they want would need to lighten the load in terms of goals.

Looking at Asensio’s record above, the Spaniard might not be the best prospect for Tottenham on paper, but he can still be a viable option if Santo needs someone to compete for starts down the right-hand side.
