Hugo Lloris speaks out on approaching Tottenham milestone
Ahead of the new season, veteran Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris spoke out on being close to a landmark achievement (h/t Tottenham official website). The keeper is on 298 appearances for the club in the Premier League. If he plays the next two, he will go on to hold the record to become the first Spurs player to make 300 appearances in the competition.
Lloris has been with Tottenham since the summer of 2012 when he arrived from Ligue 1 club, Olympique Lyon. Over the course of his nine-year stint in North London, the goalkeeper has grown into a club icon and was one of the best in the league during his peak.
He was handed the armband during the 2014-15 season and since then, he has led the club to greater heights. Highlights include a Champions League final appearance in 2019 and a Carabao Cup final last season. However, over the past couple of seasons, Lloris has started to show signs of ageing.
Even though there have been some fine performances between the sticks, there also have been occasions when he has made errors.
Nonetheless, Lloris is all set for the new season. In the next few games, he could go on to make a record for the club. If he plays the next two games, he will go on to become the first Spurs player to make 300 appearances in the Premier League.
With the record approaching, Lloris was asked how it felt. Here is his reply.
“I didn’t even know that! I don’t really think about those kinds of things. I will probably enjoy when I retire, but that’s not tomorrow! But I know it’s something important, and obviously I belong to Spurs, no? After nine seasons, I don’t know how many games I’ve played for the club, for the fans, it’s always with pride that I go on the field and try to fight for the Club. Listen, hopefully there are plenty more ahead of me, and I will have the same motivation and willingness to win.”

Lloris can achieve the milestone if he plays the next two games against Manchester City and Wolves. The new season should give Lloris another chance to prove his mettle and show that he has a bit more left in the tank.
