Transfer News: Tottenham, Aston Villa leading Mikkel Damsgaard race
According to transfer news from Calciomercato (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are at the ‘front of the queue’ for the signing of Sampdoria’s Danish attacker Mikkel Damsgaard.
Damsgaard came through the youth ranks at FC Nordsjaelland. He left his boyhood club to join Sampdoria last year and has impressed in Italy. The 21-year-old has managed two goals and four assists from 35 Serie A games in his debut season.
Damsgaard followed it up a brilliant run in the UEFA Euro 2020 with the Denmark national team, scoring two goals and setting up one more his teammate as the Danes went as far as the semifinals. His stunning goal against England in the final four stage was one of the standout moments of the summer tournament.
Damsgaard’s progress with Sampdoria and his subsequent starring run at the Euros has put him on the radars of several top clubs, with Tottenham and Aston Villa at the forefront, as per the report.
Tottenham have strengthened their attacking unit with the signing of Bryan Gil already, with the Spanish winger arriving from Sevilla in a move that saw Erik Lamela move the other way.
Gil’s arrival, coupled with the rejuvenation of Steven Bergwijn, who looked like his old self in the win over Manchester City on Sunday, as well as the presence of the likes of Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min means Tottenham have quality as well as depth in attack, at the moment.
Nonetheless, given Damsgaard’s ability to play anywhere across the frontline or even as an attacking midfielder, he would add to the squad dynamics and allow manager Nuno Espirito Santo more flexibility with regards to his selection.
