Tottenham Hotspur might keep Japhet Tanganga at the club after all

According to Football Insider (h/t football.london), Tottenham Hotspur are ready to keep Japhet Tanganga at the club this summer amidst rumours of the player leaving on loan.

The 22-year-old delivered a man-of-the-match performance against Manchester City on the weekend with new boss Nuno Espirito Santo delighted with the player’s performance. After the game, the Portuguese boss hailed the player’s performance saying (h/t Evening Standard):

“All the team did very well, but Japhet was huge today. He faced too many one on ones today against fantastic players, and he dealt fantastically with the situation.”

Tanganga was placed at right-back, and the youngster did an incredible job against City’s wide players in the form of Raheem Sterling and their latest acquisition in Jack Grealish.

With Serge Aurier not selected in the matchday squad and Matt Doherty named on the bench, Japhet Tanganga stepped up big time for his club on a day they really needed him, especially after they started the game without their star centre-forward Harry Kane.

However, Tottenham did well to win the game 1-0, thanks to a Son Heung-min goal, while the defence also did well to keep a clean sheet, something Tanganga played a huge role in.

The 22-year-old signed a five-year contract at the end of the 2019/20 season after he broke into the squad and was handed 11 first-team appearances under the reign of Jose Mourinho.

The Englishman, however, could not rack up more minutes last season as he only made 13 appearances in all competitions, including featuring in the club’s Europa League campaign.

Tanganga would be hoping to keep his place next week when Tottenham travel to Nuno Espirito Santo’s former club Wolverhampton Wanderers for their second league game of this season while he has also been named in the squad for the club’s Europa Conference League play-off tie against Pacos Ferreira on Thursday.
