Transfer News: Tottenham drop out of race for Nahitan Nandez
According to transfer news from Calciomercato (h/t Express), Tottenham have dropped out of the race for Nahitan Nandez. Spurs have been linked with the player but they might not make a move for the Uruguayan midfielder from Cagliari. That leaves sides like Leeds United with a free run at him.
The 25-year-old is a youth product of Penarol and went on to spend a considerable amount of time there. He established himself as one of the best central midfielders in South America following his move to Boca Juniors, where he impressed in the Copa Libertadores and also won the Argentine Primera Division crown in 2017-18.
Nandez’s impressive form in Argentina earned him a move to Europe with Italian club Cagliari in 2019.
The Uruguayan star has been a regular fixture in the Italian side for Leonardo Semplici. Over the last season, he went on to feature in a variety of roles, six to be exact and played 32 games in the Serie A as Cagliari avoided the drop. With his impressive showings, it was only a matter of time before clubs such as Tottenham went after him.
Even Inter Milan and Leeds United had shown interest. However, Inter dropped their interest after signing Denzel Dumfries while Spurs are also unlikely to pursue him despite the links. That leaves Leeds with the advantage in case they want to sign him. Nandez is said to have a release clause of £30.5m but Cagliari are open to a reduced offer of £21.2m.

It’s rather puzzling as to why Spurs would not want to go for a talented and versatile midfielder like Nandez. He could have been a solid addition to our engine room alongside the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Nonetheless, only time will tell if Spurs are genuinely dropping their interest in him.
