Argentina release Tottenham duo Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso
According to Evening Standard, Argentina have confirmed that the Tottenham duo of Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso have been released. The pair will now go to Croatia for 10 days for training to avoid quarantine in the UK.
It was pandemonium on Sunday at Sao Paulo when Brazil took on rivals Argentina. Barely five minutes had passed when health officials and police officers rushed onto the pitch and confronted Lo Celso, Romero and Emi Martinez for breaking COVID rules in the country (h/t Evening Standard). Any person who has been in the UK in the last two weeks must quarantine in Brazil for two weeks on arrival.
The players were in breach of the rules as they were in action for their respective clubs on the previous week. Argentina have now released the duo meaning that they will not be playing against Bolivia in the third game.
“Players Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero are also unaffected for the game with Bolivia and return to their club.”
They will now fly off to Croatia for the next 10 days for training and avoid quarantine in the UK. Spurs are said to be rather unhappy about the situation after they were not given permission to leave for international duty in the first place. The duo is expected to be fined on their return to the club.

This was a very avoidable situation that happened regardless. Romero and Lo Celso will now miss the league game against Crystal Palace and the Conference League against Rennes. Although, they are likely to be available for the London derby against Chelsea on September 19th due to this early release.
