Tottenham Hotspur’s recruitment in recent years questioned by former manager

Tim Sherwood slams Tottenham recruitment in recent years

Speaking to MyBettingSites (h/t Daily Mail), Tim Sherwood has gone on to ridicule the signings Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have made in recent years. He highlighted that the London duo have been adding average players and only deemed players like Son Heung-Min and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as good signings.

Arsenal and Tottenham are all pumped up for the North London derby on Sunday at the Emirates. Despite retaining all the fury of the rivalry, a lot of the quality has gone down in recent years. Both clubs have slipped out of the top four picture of the Premier League over the last few seasons or so and it has affected their transfer business.

Romero was signed this season by Spurs.

Perhaps the biggest transfer for Spurs over the summer was the retention of Harry Kane. Other than that, a number of young players made their way over to the N17. If one were to be honest, not a lot of them were world-beaters per se. Arsenal were similar in their recruitment as they too went after a number of young players.

Former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood spoke out ahead of the derby. He opined that neither of the teams recruited well in the last few seasons and that most of them were average players, barring a few.

‘Both teams’ recruitment has been terrible. Both clubs are signing average foreign players that block up pathways to their academy players and I don’t agree with that. It’s not healthy. I can’t remember the last time they signed a really good player. It’s been so long. I can’t really put my finger on any recent signings and say, ”yeah, he’s been a brilliant signing”.’

Tim Sherwood felt that Spurs and Arsenal have not done good recruitment in recent times

However, he did go on to add that our signings like Son and Hojbjerg were up to the mark.

‘Tottenham’s best recent signing would be Son Heung-min, but you’re going way back there. Hojbjerg is alright with the style Jose Mourinho wanted to play and certainly the way Nuno [Espirito Santo] wants to play, but for every half decent signing, you’ve probably got five not very good ones.’

Perhaps Sherwood is somewhat correct in pointing those things out. However, Spurs have always been known to spend less and get results. Only in recent seasons have the purse strings been loosened. However, without Champions League football, it was always going to be hard to attract any of the elite stars.
