Bryan Gil reveals what Tottenham Hotspur have asked him to do to adjust in the Premier League
Speaking in a pre-match press conference (h/t football.london) before the Conference League game against NS Mura, Bryan Gil revealed that he has been asked to bulk up by Tottenham Hotspur if he wants to adjust to life in the Premier League.
The 20-year-old Spaniard moved to N17 this summer in a move that saw Erik Lamela join Sevilla. The Lilywhites also agreed to pay an additional €25million on top of the swap deal, highlighting how highly Gil was being rated by the decision-makers at Spurs.
But since his move to Tottenham, he has played just 50 minutes of Premier League football. Gil wasn’t expected to be a starter straightaway considering his age and relative inexperience.
Nevertheless, fans would have expected to see him feature more than he currently has under Nuno Espirito Santo. One thing that sticks out when one looks at Gil is his physicality- or the lack of it.
Gil adjusting to life on the island
He isn’t the bulkiest footballer out there and the Premier League isn’t the most forgiving league in that aspect. And now, the former Sevilla winger has himself revealed that the club wants him to put on weight in order to get used to Premier League football.
“This is something that everyone has noticed, they have been asking me to work hard and put a lot of effort into it. I have been requested to gain some weight and to improve my physical condition and learn English. I am focusing on that and adapting.”
One of his former managers at Eibar, in an interview with Marca (h/t football.london), compared Gil’s small physical stature to that of David Silva’s and underlined how the Spanish veteran was still able to succeed in the English top-flight with Manchester City.

It’s never a bad thing to be physically competitive in duels and being able to hold your own against an opponent. It remains to be seen if Gil can bulk up and put on some weight without it impacting his nimble skills on and off the ball.
