Tottenham Hotspur are looking to get a deal done for West Bromwich Albion star Sam Johnstone
According to Football Insider (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur are looking to get a deal over the line for West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
The 28-year-old has been a mainstay at the Hawthorn stadium ever since he joined the club in 2018. However, things were different for Johnstone previously.
The Englishman was a Manchester United player and had joined the senior team in 2011 under the stewardship of Sir Alex Ferguson. However, at the same time, a certain David de Gea was also signed from Atletico Madrid and was being groomed to become the starting goalkeeper at Old Trafford.
Thus, all Johnstone could ever manage were loan moves. However, this never took anything from his performances. The shot-stopper excelled during a terrific year and a half at Aston Villa between January 2017 and May 2018.
The 28-year-old has continued his brilliant performances at West Brom and is a huge reason why the Baggies are top of the Championship table. Spurs’ interest in the Englishman comes out of the fact that Hugo Lloris’ contract is set to expire in 2022.
The Frenchman has been the club’s No. 1 for the longest time while he has also served his duties as a captain admirably, especially during the club’s road to the 2019 Champions League final.

However, given that he is 34, it remains to be seen whether the North London outfit are keen on providing him with an extension. Johnstone was also linked with a £15million summer move, but it failed to materialize. Thus, with the links getting stronger, there could be a new goalkeeper behind the Tottenham defence starting next season.
