Rafael van der Vaart believes Tottenham Hotspur should have signed Hakim Ziyech last year
Speaking to Ziggo Sport (h/t The Express), Rafael van der Vaart has explained how Tottenham Hotspur would have benefitted by signing Chelsea ace Hakim Ziyech from Ajax last season.
Chelsea shelled out big money last summer as they spent nearly £200million on six to seven players, including the signing of 28-year-old Hakim Ziyech from Ajax for £33.33million.
While the Blues faced the wrath of the winger in the 2019/20 season in the Champions League, Tottenham too had to face the 27-year-old in the semi-final of the 2018/19 UCL. Although Spurs prevailed victorious in that game, Ziyech performed admirably.
Looking at his incredible performances, the Blues snapped him up last summer while Spurs failed to make as many additions. Club icon Rafael van der Vaart has now come out and called out the North London outfit for not hijacking Chelsea’s deal for the winger last season.
He told Ziggo Sport (h/t The Express):
“With hindsight, it’s easy, but I think it was a wrong choice. I hope he still fully blossoms, but if he had gone to Tottenham, for example. They are lacking a player like him.
“He played very well at Ajax and did the same against Tottenham. Just take him then. With a player like that, Tottenham are title contenders, and they’re not now because they have all the same kind of players. It was a pity he went to Chelsea.”

Spurs currently possess the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura, Bryan Gil, and Steven Bergwijn as players who can man the flanks, and perhaps another left-footed winger would have given Nuno Espirito Santo the liberty to approach certain games differently.
Although Ziyech’s career is yet to take off at Stamford Bridge, Tottenham might have missed out on a decent signing last summer.
