Toby Alderweireld has backed Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy for doing a good job at the club

Speaking to Standard Sport (h/t football.london), former Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld has backed club chairman Daniel Levy and believes he has done a good job at the club.

Spurs have not excelled on the pitch in recent weeks, and there was also a lot of commotion when Nuno Espirito Santo was hired. Jose Mourinho’s style of football was not accepted by some fans, and it feels like sacking Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019 was never the right decision.

Since the Argentine has left, Spurs have failed to finish in the Top 4 and the early signs for this season are not painting a pretty picture either. Daniel Levy has also come under the microscope as the club have failed to lift a trophy since 2008, although he has kept the North London outfit financially afloat.

Toby Alderweireld, who spent a long time playing under Pochettino at Spurs, has now come out and backed Daniel Levy for his decision and believes that the investment has also been sound. The 32-year-old told Standard Sport (h/t football.london):

“You don’t know all the things that happen in a club. It’s not Football Manager. I know for sure that Levy gave 100 percent for the club…The structure is there to be one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“How many times do you see clubs invest too much, and then they’re in trouble? Spurs know what it is to be healthy. Of course, it will always be said ‘no silverware’, and I understand that. But it’s a wonderful period in Spurs’ history. I think the fans will enjoy thinking about it.”

Alderweireld made the move to Al-Duhail earlier this summer after making over 200 appearances for the club.

While there is no certainty on Tottenham winning a trophy any time soon, it remains to be seen what decisions Levy takes to make the push towards silverware again.
