Tottenham Hotspur gunning for Mauricio Pochettino to replace Nuno Espirito Santo

According to Football Insider via FourFourTwo (h/t Daily Mail), Tottenham Hotspur are planning to bring back Mauricio Pochettino to replace an under-fire Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Portuguese tactician replaced Jose Mourinho as Spurs’ full-time manager earlier this summer. He got off to a good start winning the club’s first three games in the Premier League. A brief stay at the top of the table was followed by an equally impressive dropoff in form.

It gave rise to a false sense of security as Tottenham have since won just one of their next six games in all competitions. This includes a triumph over  Wolverhampton Wanderers on penalties and an abject defeat to Arsenal in the North London derby.

The poor run of results has put the spotlight on Nuno, who could be facing a fight to keep his job. Former manager Pochettino was on the club’s radar earlier in the summer only for him to stay in Paris.

According to the report, the Argentine remains keen to return to the Lane. Spurs, for their part, are prepared to sack Santo should Pochettino make himself available. The Argentine’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain runs until 2023.

While Pochettino does have an affinity to Tottenham, he has a monster of a team made available to him at the Parc des Princes. An excellent summer that saw them add the likes of Lionel Messi among others will only have increased pressure on the manager to win trophies.

Pochettino is a popular figure among Spurs supports following his stint at the club. While his time at the Lane came to an acrimonious end, he also saw much success including leading us to our first UFA Champions League final.

While it would be excellent to have him back, just what he can turn around given the virus that goes on at the club remains to be seen. The last thing he needs to experience is to face the sack once again for the board’s incompetence.

Pochettino is currently at one of Europe’s top clubs, managing a group of players who can win it all. It would be curious to see if he is willing to give it up only to come and take over Tottenham Hotspur. Once bitten, twice shy.
