Tottenham fans react after losing streak ends with win over Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur finally ended their rancid run in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa this Sunday. Pressure had been building on Nuno Espirito Santo in recent weeks.
Three league defeats in a row saw Spurs plummet down the table after a flying start that saw them procure 9 points out of a possible 9 and head into the first international break leading the pack in England.
But since then, Spurs have seen defeats against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Crystal Palace in three London derbies. Wins in the EFL Cup and Conference League were not enough to assuage the fans’ fears about the direction the club is heading in.
The fans even demanded an emergency meeting with the board after the club’s embarrassing 3-1 loss against Arsenal. But now, that run has come to an end thanks to a 2-1 win at home.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg opened the scoring in the 27th minute as Spurs went into the break leading 1-0. Ollie Watkins pulled the Villans level with a neatly taken goal around the 67th-minute mark.
But an own goal from Matt Targett four minutes later proved to be decisive. The win takes Spurs, at least for the time being, 8th on the table and the club would go into the international break with back-to-back victories.
