Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier has joined Villarreal CF
According to the Evening Standard, ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier has signed a one-year contract with Spanish side Villarreal CF.
Serge Aurier had a topsy turvy time with Tottenham Hotspur. He found it difficult to cement his position in the first-team, especially after Jose Mourinho’s arrival. The right-back found himself down on the current pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur. He parted ways with the Lilywhites and had been a free agent ever since the deadline day of the last transfer window.
The Ivorian defender’s inconsistency meant that the club went on to sign players like Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal to fill in that role at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. The 28-year-old made 77 Premier League appearances for Spurs in his tenure for the North London club during which time he recorded 5 goals and 12 assists. The Ivory Coast international now joins former Arsenal boss Unai Emery at Villarreal.
The right-back joins the Spanish club on a one-year contract. The contract is also believed to have an extension option of 2 years after his current deal expires. Aurier and Emery know each other since their time at Paris Saint-Germain.

The former PSG right-back will be looking to make his presence felt after becoming an outcast in the latter stages of his tenure at Spurs. Villarreal have been establishing their presence once again as they defeated Manchester United last season to clinch the Europa League title.
Another ex-Tottenham player Juan Foyth made a permanent move to the Spanish club recently and Serge Aurier would be competing with him to gain a starting spot in Emery’s squad.
