The Newcastle United fan who collapsed during their fixture against Tottenham Hotspur is making ‘great progress’
According to Sky Sports, the Newcastle United fan who was in need of urgent medical assistance during their fixture against Tottenham Hotspur is now recovering well.
It was a grim moment for fans and players when 80-year-old Alan George Smith collapsed in the stand after suffering from a cardiac arrest. Sergio Reguilon was the first to bring this to the attention of referee Andre Marriner and Eric Dier sprinted to the touchline to notify the medical staff who immediately attended to the situation.
The players and the staff showed amazing competence and the octogenarian is said to be making great progress right now. The match was suspended in the 40th minute so that his condition could be stabilised.
His family has shared a statement thanking everyone who helped him in his recovery right from nurses to the paramedics and the stewards who were at the scene:
“We would also like to thank and pay tribute to the doctors and nurses who administered CPR, the paramedics from North East Ambulance Service, St John’s Ambulance, fans and stewards at the scene, as well the medical staff at the RVI and Freeman Hospital. We will be forever grateful.”
Doctor Tom Prichard who played an important role in saving the life of that fan also shared his experience on the incident. He spoke about how he made his way from the East stand to attend to the fan and also appreciated the services of everyone who was involved in the incident.
Prichard highlighted the importance of early CPR and how it can help save lives in difficult situations:
“The importance of early CPR and early defibrillation is what saved this man’s life, it’s what saved Christian Eriksen’s life. Getting things done early is what matters, if St John’s hadn’t been there or he was at home by himself he wouldn’t have survived.”
