Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn believes the club are the favourites for the UEFA Conference League
Ahead of their fixture against SBV Vitesse, (h/t Football.London), Steven Bergwijn has opened up about Tottenham Hotspur and their need to win the UEFA Europa Conference League this season. He also went on to reveal his favourite position in the team.
Bergwijn has had several injury issues ever since he made the switch to North London from PSV Eindhoven. This has hampered his progress at Spurs and he has only managed to score 4 goals and provide 9 assists in 56 matches across all competitions.
The 24-year-old recently returned to full fitness and could feature against Vitesse later tonight. When asked about Spurs need to win a major trophy, the former PSV player commented on the fact that the Europa Conference League was a great bet and they should try everything in their power to win the competition:
“It’s very important, we are playing in the Europa Conference League and I think we are the favourites in it now and we need to do everything to win it.”
Bergwijn has been praised by Nuno Espirito Santo on quite a few occasions and the 24-year-old has expressed his delight at that. Injuries and inconsistent game time can have a detrimental effect on any player and the Holland international will hopefully be able to get back to his best.
The Netherlands forward was also quick to shoot down the claim of his refusal to play as a right-winger for the national team. He cleared the air and also highlighted his favourite position on the pitch for both club and country:
“It is not the case that I said I don’t want to play on the right-winger. The only thing I said to Van Gaal is that I am at my best when I play as a left-winger. That is the position I play at Tottenham and where I played at PSV, but I have said wherever he needs me. When the trainer asks me to play as a right-winger I will play right-winger.”

With a hectic schedule on the cards, Nuno and the team will be hoping to have as many players available as possible. This would help the coach rotate and preserve the fitness of the key players in the squad. Bergwijn would be hoping that he can remain fit consistently and make more of an impact with the Lilywhites this season.
