Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou admits to putting huge demands on Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers
Speaking in an interview (h/t Daily Record), Premiership coach Ange Postecoglou admitted to asking a lot from his centre-backs including Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers.
The 23-year-old centre-back is on loan at the Scottish club. The deal for the young defender was finalized on the deadline day of the last transfer window. Celtic are currently placed in 4th position in the Scottish Premiership. They have the second-best defensive record behind only Dundee United in Scotland’s top-flight football league.
It is essential that a budding footballer like Carter-Vickers gets quality game time to develop the finer aspects of his game. The USA international has formed a solid partnership with Carl Starfelt in the backline. Joe Hart has been a guiding figure at the back to support the defensive duo.
And the Australian manager has praised the efficiency of the 23-year-old defender. The Athens-born Celtic boss believes that the pair are hungry to learn and improve their game:
“We signed Cam on deadline day then virtually threw him into the first team. But he is a really calm character and mature beyond his years. Even though he’s fairly young he’s settled into the club really well and the key thing for the two of them is they want to learn, they want to improve.”
Cameron is a Tottenham Hotspur academy product and made his way through the U-18 and U-23 Spurs squad. He has made 5 appearances with the North London club at the senior level. The young centre-back has played 9 matches for the Hoops and scored 1 goal across all competitions.
The Celtic manager highlighted that their style of play is not easy. He spoke about the fact that it demanded a lot from his central defenders as they prefer to play from the back:
“The way we play is not easy for any centre-backs. We ask a lot of them. We ask them to be playing out from the back then to squeeze up and be aggressive with our defending. It’s a lot easier to be playing centre-back in other teams, I can guarantee you. But they’ve tackled it and we know there’s more to come from both of them.”
