Glenn Hoddle gives scathing assessment after Tottenham Hotspur lose to SBV Vitesse in the UEFA Europa Conference League
In Glenn Hoddle’s post-match comments (h/t Express), the former English footballer gave a vicious evaluation of Tottenham Hotspur after their loss to SBV Vitesse in the UEFA Conference League.
The Lilywhites have had a rocky season under Nuno Espirito Santo so far. They started this Premier League campiagn in fine fashion but have struggled to maintain the same consistency throughout. Spurs seemed to have rediscovered their form with back-to-back victories in the PL against Aston Villa and Newcastle United but their sordid result in midweek would make you question the depth in this squad.
Spurs never got going on the day and had very little to show in terms of attacking threat apart from a Bryan Gil shot that struck the crossbar. This could have been a great chance for some of the fringe players like Dele Alli and Harry Winks to make a mark, but their performances were not up to the required standards.
The former Spurs player remarked about Tottenham’s performance. He highlighted their lack of creativity and ability to control the game:
“It’s a very very poor performance. The attitude was wrong, they have to look at themselves in the mirror. There are Spurs fans who have travelled across here, they deserve better. But also there was a lack of ability. Sometimes you can say there was no desire or mental approach to the game that’s one thing that wasn’t there. But their abilities were poor today, there was no creativity.”
Despite the defeat, the Portuguese manager stuck by his decision to field an entirely different team to the one that won against Newcastle United on Saturday. The UEFA Europa Conference League would be seen as our best bet to win a European trophy right now. That being said, the North London club will have to put in better performances if such a thing is to happen.

Spurs will play West Ham United on Sunday in the PL. It is expected that Nuno would field a much stronger team than the one that played against the Dutch club. Harry Kane finally recorded his first Premier League goal of the season against the Magpies last Saturday. With the pressure to win after midweek’s disappointing result, the Tottenham faithful will be hoping for a positive result against the Hammers.
