Sunderland manager Lee Johnson takes a cheeky swipe at Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur after defeating QPR
In a post-match interview (h/t Sunderland Twitter account), Sunderland manager, Lee Johnson has casually remarked that he would love to play against Tottenham Hotspur or Arsenal in the Carabao Cup in the next round.
The Black cats defeated Queens Park Rangers on penalties in their last EFL fixture. Lee Burge was the hero of the day for Sunderland as his firm presence in goal helped secure the win for his club.
Both North London clubs Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been struggling in the last couple of seasons. Spurs have barely managed to secure European football via the UEFA Europa Conference League whereas the Gunner have had to do without European competition this season.
These clubs have slowly witnessed a decline in their importance with victories and silverware hard to come by. The Lilywhites haven’t won a major trophy in 13 years whereas Arsenal won their last Premier League trophy in the 2003/04 season.
Johnson was in good spirits after his team’s victory over the Hoops. He also made sarcastic comments regarding the North Londoners when asked about his preference for the next opponents. To add to it, he also snidely remarks that Tottenham is not one of the big guns anymore.
“I’d love to have Arsenal away or Tottenham away, or someone like that. Then we will wait for the really big guns when it is two legs.”
While these comments may have been all fun and games, Spurs for one have had a rocky start to the campaign. Their disappointing defeat to Dutch club SBV Vitesse in their last UEFA Europa Conference League match highlighted the improvements needed in the squad.
One cannot blame anyone but ourselves for falling from grace. The club has struggled to maintain the promise brought about by the Champions League Final appearance in 2019. It is now going to be a long road ahead to reach a similar level again.
