Nuno Espirito Santo speaks about Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli after EFL Cup victory over Burnley
In the post-match presentation after the win against Burnley, (h/t Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo spoke about Dele Alli and highlighted that the midfielder still has to improve and will be assessed in their next training session.
The English international was left out of the squad that claimed a much-needed 1-0 win against the Clarets. A superb cross from Emerson Royal saw Lucas Moura head the ball past Nick Pope in the decisive goal of the day. The Brazilian’s header saw them power into the quarter-final of the EFL Cup.
Burnley have themselves been struggling to get going and are without a victory in the Premier League this season. Dele Alli has struggled to maintain his starting position in the Lilywhites senior squad in the last few seasons. His disappointing performance against SBV Vitesse in their last UEFA Europa Conference League fixture didn’t do him any favours in this regard.
Nuno spoke about Alli after the victory against Burnley. He also mentioned that the midfielder needs to improve and will be assessed in the next training session:
“They are our players, we continue to focus on getting the best out of each of our players. Dele is one of the cases we have to try and improve. We have a training session tomorrow and we will assess all the players like we always do. They are our players so anything is possible, this is my answer.”
The 25-year-old midfielder has witnessed a certain stagnation in his career after coming into the limelight under former manager Mauricio Pochetino. Alli has won the PFA Young Player of the Year award twice. This makes him part of an elite list that includes Ryan Giggs, Robbie Fowler, and Wayne Rooney.
The 25-year-old midfielder was thought of as the club’s future torchbearer by many but has dwindled as the seasons have gone by. His fellow teammate Harry Winks seems to be on the same trajectory. Alli was even considered as one of the best upcoming English players when he was starting out.
