Ian Wright decodes the problems with Tottenham Hotspur ahead of their match against Manchester United
Speaking on Optus Sport’s The Kelly & Wrighty Show (h/t Metro), Arsenal legend Ian Wright has analysed the issues with Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the match against Manchester United. Spurs are set to face United in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 30 October.
Tottenham had kicked off their campaign very well as they won three consecutive matches early in the season. However, they have fallen off from that early promise and have been largely inconsistent recently.
Wright believes that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have a major weakness in their midfield which was exposed in recent games. He also thinks that the pragmatism shown by Nuno is another reason for the English side’s plight.
“I think with Nuno his major problem is his midfield. You’ve got Harry Kane who is not getting chances. We know everything that’s happened with Harry Kane, he’s trying to do his stuff and trying to get on with it.”
The former Gunners striker also added that while he feels his former club did well against Nuno’s side by beating them, it was not a side that had a form of identity that dictates their game plan.
“Nuno is very pragmatic in what he does. I think he’s a level down from Mourinho in respects of his game, it’s even more pragmatic, on the break, that kind of stuff. Tottenham need a lot more than that.”

Even with the mediocre form, Santo’s team sit sixth in the table and a win can still push for the top four. However, if success is to be targeted then the issues within the squad need to be addressed. The Portuguese boss should take the initiative in that regard as he is the one that determines the identity of the team.
