Nuno Espirito Santo reveals the progress shown by Tottenham Hotspur defenders Emerson Royal and Cristian Romero
In his pre-match conference for the Manchester United fixture (h/t Tottenham Hotspur Official site), Tottenham Hotspur manager, Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed that summer recruits Emerson Royal and Cristian Romero are making substantial progress.
The South American duo played a crucial role in the EFL Cup win against Burnley earlier this week. The Brazilian right-back presented the only assist in the game against the Clarets as Spurs made it to the last eight of the competition. The Argentine defender was similarly impressive and was bestowed with the Man of the Match award on the night.
Both Emerson and Romero are slowly starting to cement their place in a new-look Spurs backline under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo. The latter also played an instrumental role in Argentina winning the Copa América this time.
Nuno assessed the defensive duo and stated that both of them have been improving. It comes as little surprise given that both players were signed with an eye for the future.
“I think he’s (Romero) improving, and two players who are stepping up and improving are Emerson and Cuti Romero, definitely. The Premier League is very demanding. They felt at the beginning the impact of the competition, but now they are settling down, and that’s what we need. Players who arrive (from a different country), as soon as they get the right adaptation, the talent is there, so they will be good for us.”
It can be difficult for players to adapt to the conditions of the Premier League, especially at a young age. Romero and Royal seem to be getting better with every game for the Spurs outfit. Fabio Paratici and the management have done a decent job of recruiting young players with immense potential to secure the future of the club. Apart from the South American duo Bryan Gil and Pape Matar Sarr are also good examples of this vision.

The Lilywhites have had a rocky start to life this season. They are struggling to create chances in the final third of the pitch. Nuno would be hoping that his players can put in another spirited performance after entering the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup. The Portuguese manager and the supporters would also be hoping that Royal and Romero can have the same kind of impact against Manchester United in their upcoming Premier League fixture.
