Transfer News: Boost for Tottenham Hotspur as Real Madrid brace for Marco Asensio departure
According to El Nacional (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Marco Asensio. Real Madrid are ready to offload the 25-year-old in the upcoming transfer windows.
The Spanish winger is under contract until 2023. However Real president Florentino Perez is worried about Asensio’s market value dipping. The player himself has also not impressed since recovering from a knee injury.
Asensio has started only three matches for Real this season and has struggled to break into the first team under Carlo Ancelotti. The Spanish international made 35 appearances in La Liga last campaign, 21 of which came from the start.
He has also been in and out of the team under previous managers Zinedine Zidane, Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari. A player who promised much once, he has failed to live up to expectations.
The lack of game time under Ancelotti might force the Spanish international to think about his future. Tottenham have been linked with the player for a while now. Whether the time has come for them to make a decisive move to land his services remains to be seen.
Asensio joined Real Madrid from Mallorca in 2015 for just over €4m. Real’s arch-rivals Barcelona were also interested in his signature during that time but he preferred a move to 12-time Champions League winners. While he has had his moments for Los Blancos, they have come few and far between.
In six years at Real, Asensio has made over 200 appearances, scoring 40 goals and assisting in 23. He has also won two Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles, a Spanish Super Cup, three FIFA Club World Cups and two UEFA Super Cups.
A proven winner, he could do with a fresh start in his career. Tottenham is in need of another dependable attacker who can help take the load off Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. Asensio has the potential to be that player should Nuno Espirito Santo get the best out of him.

While Real may be ready to sell Asensio, it remains to be seen what chance Tottenham have of landing him. With no Champions League football on offer, Nuno and Daniel Levy will have a hard sell on their cards. Landing him would be nothing short of a coup for the North Londoners.
