According to Sky Sports (h/t ESPN), Sam Johnstone is linked with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur amidst talks for a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur. The English club also faces competition from several other Premier League clubs for the goalkeeper.

The 28-year-old will be a free agent once the season ends next summer. West Bromwich Albion wants to tie him down on a new contract. However, nothing has been finalised at the moment, and they run the risk of losing him on a free.

It is stated that West Brom are not worried as they plan to fine-tune negotiations in January. Baggies manager, Valerien Ismael has also admitted that things are normal as it stands at the moment.

While he does call for discussions to become more intensive, West Brom will have to do more to give themselves a good chance when it comes to negotiations. He is not overly worried about Johnstone’s situation and has compared the situation akin to a chess game.

“From January we will start to go more intensively in the discussion but at the moment we’re all focused on the pitch, on the performances. We know what we have to do to give ourselves a good position for the negotiation with him.”

The goalkeeper has helped his current side to a third position in the EFL Championship with six clean sheets from 14 league games. His team is set to face Hull City in a league game as they continue to challenge for promotion to the Premier League.

“It’s a patient game now, like a chess game. He wants to see. For sure, we want to extend and, at the minute, I’m not worried, it’s a normal process.”

34-year-old Hugo Lloris is at the latter end of his career and will need to be replaced sooner rather than later. Johnstone could very well take the mantle for himself, should he make the move.  Whether that happens remains to be seen.
