Harry Redknapp thinks Antonio Conte must sign Giorgio Chiellini at Tottenham Hotspur
According to The Sun, Harry Redknapp has told Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte to target Giorgio Chiellini in the winter transfer window by all means necessary.
Giorgio Chiellini is one of the greatest defenders of this generation. Though his age could be a concern for managers, the 37-year-old has shown that he has great power left in his engine. He was an exceptional player at the Euro 2020 and was one of the key reasons for Italy’s success in the tournament.
Harry Redknapp thinks the Spurs contingent has many talented players, but nobody gives them the guide or leadership.
“And we saw once again on Thursday against Vitesse Arnhem – hardly one of Europe’s big guns – how badly Spurs need someone to take command of that defence.”
The former Tottenham manager also praised Chiellini’s abilities and said how Conte could use the help of such a veteran defender to strengthen his backline.
“I’ve said plenty of times that squad is packed with talent, but what they really need is a leader, an organiser, a winner – and Chiellini ticks every one of those boxes.”
The 74-year-old former English manager suggested that the Juventus defender won’t have to do much running for Conte’s team because many players in the squad would do that. But what he can do is organize the people around him and make it harder for the opponent.
“You stick Chiellini in the middle and let him run the show. You don’t need him in the channels, just heading the ball away and organising the rest.”
He has another year left in his contract, and Harry Redknapp thinks Conte should convince Daniel Levy to go for the defender in the next transfer window.
Conte coached Giorgio Chiellini at Juventus. So, he knows the big Italian defender who has years of experience and could play a pivotal role in the Spurs’ defence, as he showed for Roberto Mancini’s team this summer when they won the UEFA Euros.
