Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he was close to joining Tottenham Hotspur
Speaking on a Sky Sports Fan Q&A (h/t Evening Standard), Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed that he was close to joining Tottenham Hotspur at one point in his career.
The 32-year-old joined the Gunners from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £60m in 2018. Following the move, he has scored 92 goals and provided 21 assists in 159 appearances across all competitions.
Aubameyang also won the FA Cup and English Super Cup while winning the Premier League Golden Boot once at the Emirates Stadium. During the Q&A, he was adamant that he would retire rather than join Tottenham even if they would be his only chance of playing football.
“You don’t need to ask the question. You know it already. I would retire.”
The Gabonese forward was replying to a question from one of the Gooners. He added that he almost joined Spurs in the past, but the deal broke off because of unknown reasons that he does not know even today.
“I don’t know if you know this, but a few years ago, I was close to signing for Tottenham. In the end… I don’t know what they did. So I’d rather retire!”

While there is no question about his quality as an attacker, the missed chance to sign him is not the end of the world. Harry Kane was arguably better than the Gabonese following the period after his signing, and thus, it’s not like the club lost out on a vital signing.
The Gunners striker has been better in the league this season, but the days shouldn’t be long now when Antonio Conte would help get Kane’s goalscoring form back to his usual best. Until then, this would be another topic that the rivals fans would banter about.
