Gareth Southgate backs Tottenham Hotspur ace Harry Kane to break Wayne Rooney’s goal tally for England
In conversation after the World Cup Qualifier against San Marino (h/t Evening Standard), Gareth Southgate has backed Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane to break Wayne Rooney’s goal-scoring record for England.
The 28-year-old striker may be struggling for the Lilywhites in the Premier League this season but he has put in some spectacular performances for the Three Lions recently.
Kane became the first player to score back-to-back hattricks for the National squad since 1957 and has also recorded the most number of goals for England in a calendar year. His four goals against San Marino in their latest World Cup Qualifier also means that he is now level with Gary Lineker at 48 goals for the England Football team. Rooney currently holds the record with 53 international goals.
Gareth Southgate spoke about Kane and his mentality. He also highlighted that it is only a matter of time before he will break the Manchester United legend’s English all-time scoring record.
“Certainly the other three games of this magnitude in this group, we didn’t give him the minutes. He understood that, of course. He has got huge personal ambitions as well as the team ones. He showed again the clinical nature and mentality he has got. There is no reason he can’t. It’s not is he going to break the record, it is when, and what might he do once he is beyond that point.”
The 28-year-old striker was stuck in a harrowing position earlier this summer as a transfer to major rivals Manchester City failed to materialize. He has managed to score just one goal in the Premier League this season for the North Londoners and looks like a shadow of his former self.

Kane has witnessed a drastic difference in his form for The Three Lions compared to the Lilywhites this campaign. The mood may have shifted a bit with a world-renowned manager like Antonio Conte coming to N-17. The English international and fans would be hoping that he can regain his old form with the North London club in their upcoming fixtures.
