Transfer News: Ajax wants Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn on loan
According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf via FootballOranje (h/t Football.London), Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn has attracted interest from Ajax who look to price him away on a loan transfer. He has not been successful during his time at Tottenham due to various reasons.
Bergwijn joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in 2020 for a fee of £27m and arrived at the club amidst much hype. However, he has failed to live up to the expectations, having failed to find favour under multiple managers.
The 24-year-old is yet to play under Antonio Conte as he missed the game against NS Mura due to an illness. The former Chelsea boss had fielded a rotated squad to try out the rest of the team, and he could have featured if he was available.
The Dutchman has played 60 matches for the English club but has scored just four goals with nine assists to add to his tally. He was solid for his national team in the November Qualifiers for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, scoring a stunner while assisting another goal as the Netherlands qualified for the World Cup.
The Dutch club is interested in getting his services on a loan deal and could offer a situation where he could get consistent minutes. If the loan transfer happens, he will move to familiar surroundings, which could help him to find his feet again.
However, the loan transfer could depend on the future of David Neres, who could look for a move away from his current club. With the January transfer window drawing closer, it would be interesting to see how the situation develops in the coming days.
With time still left for the winter transfer window, there is still a chance for the winger to impress Conte, if he hasn’t already. The Dutchman is yet to feature under the Tottenham boss and is bound to get chances under him. Should he impress with his displays, this could be the breakthrough he needs to finally get his Spurs career going.

The forward line has struggled in front of the goal this season, even under the 52-year-old coach. It provides a perfect stage for the Dutch international to take advantage of, as it could determine his future at the North London club.
Currently, we don’t really boast of a lot of first-team wingers who are ready to get regular starts. Bryan Gil only just arrived this summer and is perhaps a little too inexperienced to be trusted week in, week out. Erik Lamela departed this summer while Lucas Moura has often been used down the middle. In such a scenario, the club should look to keep Bergwijn- who is a versatile wide man capable of playing down both wings.
