Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte speaks about the postponement of the Premier League fixture vs Burnley
According to The official Twitter handle of Tottenham Hotspur, Antonio Conte highlighted his concerns for the players and supported the postponement of the Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley game.
The Lilywhites did not get the chance to take on The Clarets at Turf Moor today in view of the heavy snowfall which rendered the pitch unplayable. While this may be a big disappointment especially to the travelling Spurs fans, Conte believes that playing in such conditions could defeat the purpose of playing the beautiful game.
Any attempt to salvage the match was ultimately in vain as the undersoil heating struggled to match the incessant snow that was piling up on the pitch. The officials waited for as much time as possible but eventually had to call it off and there hasn’t been any update as to when the fixture shall be rescheduled.
Conte spoke about the decision regarding postponing the match. He also highlighted that the safety of the players should be of paramount importance:
“I think in these conditions it’s not football. I want to play football, I want to have fun, to play and to give information. I think in this situation it’s impossible and there is serious risk for the players to take injury and this is not good.”
With a packed festive season on the cards, the postponement of this match would hopefully not affect our upcoming recent schedule in any way. The North Londoners, who are competing in several competitions at once, could certainly do without the added burden of another fixture being crammed in an already hectic schedule.
The Italian manager would have liked to get back to winning ways on the pitch after losing out to NS Mura in their latest UEFA Europa Conference League game. They conceded a last-minute winner to the Slovenian club which was also the first loss for Conte as manager of Tottenham Hotspur.
The North Londoners were forced to play most of the fixture with 10 men after Ryan Sessegnon picked up a red card in the 31st minute. Harry Kane managed to peg one back for Spurs despite the numerical disadvantage but the result highlighted a glaring lack of depth in the squad at N-17.
Burnely have themselves been struggling to get points on the board and are currently 18th in the Premier League table. Sean Dyche’s men are currently in the relegation zone and Spurs would have looked to take on the Lancashire-based club that would be pretty low on confidence at the moment in view of how this season is panning out for them.

While football may provide a sense of joy to millions around the world including the fans and players, playing in such dangerous conditions would only increase the likelihood of injuries or other unforeseen circumstances.
As for Conte’s comments, it was important for the club to get out a statement as soon as possible to calm some of the agitated Spurs fans who had made the trip to get to the stadium. And who better to address their concerns than the man of the hour, Antonio Conte- someone who has the full attention and support of the fanbase at the moment.
