Joe Rodon open to leaving Tottenham Hotspur in January due to being frustrated
According to Alasdair Gold of Football.London in a Q&A session, Joe Rodon is ‘open’ to leaving Tottenham Hotspur in January on a loan transfer after being frustrated with the lack of game time following his move. The situation could also be impacted by Spurs’ decision to bring in a new defender, particularly in the case of Cristian Romero’s injury proving to be serious.
Rodon left Swansea City last year and joined Tottenham after a transfer fee of around £12 million was paid for his services. Having impressed with his time at Swansea, there was a cause for optimism when he arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
However, things have not gone according to plan. Rodon has often been overlooked in favour of more experienced defenders in Spurs’ backline. He has played in 20 matches since his move, with just 8 of these being Premier League starts.
He recently started against NS Mura in the UEFA Europa Conference League but was substituted in the second half. The decision to sub him off could have been influenced by Ryan Sessegnon’s early red card in the first 31 minutes of the game, but it can be argued that the decision to take Rodon off instead of, say, Davinson Sanchez, was a bit harsh.
The Welsh international also failed to make the matchday squad against Burnley, and Sanchez was preferred over him yet again. The match got postponed due to harsh weather conditions, but it would have certainly added to his frustrations.
The centre-back has played more minutes for his national team than his club, which is a remarkable stat. He has been impressive for Rob Page’s side during his international games, which would make him wonder just why he is being constantly snubbed.
Looking at his situation, one would feel for him as he has done nothing wrong to be in this plight. It is understandable why he is open for a loan move in January, as he has not been getting enough chances to make his mark here.
Cristian Romero’s injury has been a chance for Rodon to get a crack at first-team football. And with Conte known for his three-at-the-back system, it is likely that he can get some minutes under the former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss.

Left-back Ben Davies has been preferred in the unorthodox role of a centre-back, however, so the situation can be complicated by that. If the club thinks that they have the depth to get through this season, then a loan move for Rodon in January may not be a bad idea.
Ryan Sessegnon, for example, was helped when he went out and got some minutes at Fulham and in the Bundesliga. The same could be the case for the Welshman if he does depart N17 temporarily.
