Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte plays coy regarding January transfer window plans
Speaking ahead of the game against Brentford (h/t The Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte reiterated that he has no particular plans for the January transfer window.
The Italian was appointed at the start of November, following the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo. His side picked up two victories in their first three games before losing humiliatingly to Slovenian side NS Mura.
Following that defeat, Conte revealed that he was starting to understand the extent of the situation at the club before revealing that his side’s quality is not high.
Understandably, one would have thought that he might have plans of bringing in reinforcements in January.
However, the 52-year-old has dismissed those claims, stating that he is yet to discuss that with the chairman.
“I did not talk about January or the way to improve the team. I repeat: I am here because I have great enthusiasm, great patience to start a new work with Tottenham. If I am here, it is because I want to build something important with the club…We need patience and time, but I have great desire to do something great.”
Need for reinforcements
We do have quality players, but certainly not a quality team that is strong in all areas. There are gaps in the squad that need refreshing, and they need to be tended to immediately. The club also recently learned about the extent of the injury to Cristian Romero.
The 23-year-old is ruled out for 2021 and might return in February. Our defence looks a little thin without him. Conte usually prefers a back three system week-in and week-out. One would think losing Romero would force a rethinl. Clearly not.
He also needs to pay attention to the Harry Kane situation. The Englishman has been horrible in front of goal, despite his equalizer against NS Mura a week ago.
The centre-forward has little to no competiton up front, thereby forcing the manager’s hand at playing him regularly despite his poor performances.

The midfield might also need tuning, given that a replacement was not brought in for Moussa Sissoko in the summer. Thus, Conte needs to evaluate his squad in totality before making an informed decision on his transfer plans for the winter window.
Wheter the Italian in speaking the truth or playing the cards close to his chest remains to be seen.
