According to the Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf (h/t The Express), Liverpool could prompt interest from Ajax Amsterdam for the services of Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn. It is tied to the future of David Neres, who has been a long term target of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Dutchman has barely played some minutes under Antonio Conte and has previously struggled to make a mark at N17. He joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of £27million and despite a strong start has largely failed to live up to the expectations.

Having played 62 matches for Spurs, he has scored just four goals while assisting nine times in the process. However, his situation in England is a sharp contrast to when he plays for his national team. He had impressed for the Netherlands during their 2022 Qatar World Cup qualification campaign and has been one of their best players.

Should Klopp’s team move to sign Neres, the Dutch club would look at the 24-year-old Tottenham winger as a suitable replacement. A proven Earedivisie talent, Bergwijn could thrive back in home conditions.

Time to part ways?

There is still time ahead of the January transfer window, and if the Dutch international impresses under Conte, he could yet gain a foothold in the team. He has a clean slate under the Italian should do everything in his ability to impress the Italian during training.

There is a lack of depth in the forward line as Son Heung-Min, and Lucas Moura have little to no backups on the wings. Ryan Sessegnon could stand in for Sergio Reguilon as a wing-back, whereas Bryan Gil has not yet made a mark for us.

The Spurs attacker has many advantages in this circumstance, and it will come down to him whether he has a future here or not. He is sure to get his chances given the busy festive schedule of games.

Conte will need to rotate his side judiciously and Bergwijn despite his inconsistent run of performances will not be short of opportunities. Whether he tasks them or not remains to be seen.
