Tottenham Hotspur risk being eliminated from the UEFA Europa Conference League
According to UEFA (h/t Metro), Unable to find a rescheduling time for the postponed Tottenham Hotspur vs Stade Rennais match, the governing body has decided to restrict the game from happening.
Spurs recently suffered a massive Covid-19 crisis. Now, it is believed that 20 staff directly connected to the Spurs first team have returned positive tests. The crisis certainly has shaken things up at the Tottenham stadium.
Antonio Conte’s team previously released a statement saying that their game against Rennais has been postponed due to the prevailing concerns.
However, the Ligue 1 club strongly criticized the North London club’s decision, terming it as ‘unilateral’.
But the recent UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) decision could land Spurs in hot water. The European governing body has released their statement earlier today, which could be concerning for the North London club.
It was revealed that they tried to find a ‘viable solution’ for rescheduling the match that could work in favour of both teams. However, despite their best efforts, the Governing body couldn’t find a middle ground.
In such a case, the Union has decided to prevent the game from happening. Now, for the consequences, they have hinted that they would use the ‘Annex J’ to deliver the verdict on what will happen with Spurs.
‘Annex J’ suggests that the match would be forfeited, and the club that could not participate in the game would be held responsible. In such a case, the club held accountable would be considered to have been defeated by a 3-0 scoreline.
Tottenham had a volatile performance in the UEFA conference League campaign. Going into the last group game, they needed a win to secure the 2nd spot in Group G. However, the UEFA’s verdict could push Spurs to be eliminated from the European tournament.
