London rivals lead the race to sign 28-year-old Tottenham target playing in the Championship

Transfer News: West Ham United lead Tottenham Hotspur in the race for West Bromwich Albion star Sam Johnstone

According to The Sun [Print edition] (h/t The Shields Gazette), West Ham United are in the lead for securing the services of West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone ahead of Tottenham Hotspur. He is currently plying his trade in the Championship, and a Premier League move could be an attractive offer if he wants to make the jump.

The 28-year-old has featured in 21 games this season and has conceded only 15 goals while keeping ten clean sheets in the process. His performances have helped his team to third place in the league and are in contention for promotion to the top flight.

Tottenham have been dealt a blow as West Ham have leapfrogged them in the race for the 28-year-old’s signature. They also face competition from Southampton, who have been keeping tabs in hopes for a potential move in the coming windows.

If Spurs are targeting the Englishman to replace Hugo Lloris in the future, a hefty task awaits ahead of them. His current contract is set to run down in the summer of 2022, meaning he could be available on the cheap.

However, the North London club have opened negotiations with Lloris over an extension which could mean that they still value his services. He continues to play at a top level and is arguably one of the most consistent performers in the team.

Goalkeepers usually play for an extended period compared to the outfield players, but he still needs to be replaced looking at the future.

Sam Johnstone will be out of contract next year.

Looking at how the Hawthorns keeper has fared so far, he would be a smart replacement considering his contract situation. However, it would be tough to convince him to move to N17 if he does not get regular minutes.

David Moyes’ side could also use a goalkeeper and in all honesty, could offer him minutes instantly, while he could have to wait to be a regular starter until Lloris calls it quits.

If there is a worry regarding his stature, we don’t have to look further than our London rivals, Arsenal, who signed a Championship keeper in Aaron Ramsdale. The Englishman has now become their first-choice goalkeeper over Germany international, Bernd Leno.

Time will tell how this situation develops, considering that the winter transfer window is on the horizon. But we must be quick and decisive with our intent if we actually do want to lure him away from the grasps of other potential suitors.
