Tottenham Hotspur hand Newcastle United the initiative to sign Kieran Trippier in January
According to Daily Express, Tottenham Hotspur have dropped the idea to make a move for Kieran Trippier, which boosts Newcastle United’s intentions to make him their first signing of the upcoming January transfer window.
The full-back left Tottenham to join Atletico Madrid in 2019 for £20m. The British right-back had a decent spell with Diego Simeone’s team and played a key role in their La Liga win last season. However, his performances have dipped this season.
The former Spurs player suffered a shoulder injury this season and has made 17 appearances across all competitions this season.
Tottenham were believed to be interested in a reunion with their former player. But according to ESPN, Antonio Conte’s team currently have no intentions to make a move for the British player in January. Manchester United also have backed off from their interest in the 31-year-old in recent times.
This approach from the Premier League giants has significantly boosted the Toons’ intentions to land the right-back in the January transfer window. Eddie Howe’s team currently has the financial backing to complete the transfer and are eyeing to make additions to their squad to aid them in the relegation dogfight.
Tottenham signed Emerson Royal in the summer to bolster their full-back options. The former Barcelona player has become a regular under Antonio Conte and has provided some good performances this season.

However, Matt Doherty’s Spurs future has remained uncertain. Thus, if the Irish full-back decides to leave in January, Conte would need to bring reinforcements. But a reunion with Kieran Trippier seems unlikely at this moment.
