Ex-Spurs player Tottenham Hotspur urges to sign Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse
Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara has urged Tottenham Hotspur to sign Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse following his performance on Tuesday. The latter had faced off against the Lilywhites and scored the goal for his side in a 1-1 draw.
Ward-Prowse is on a hot streak currently, which has seen him on the scoresheet for the past three games. Usually known for his set-piece speciality, he has had splendid performances this term, which was also the case against Spurs in the Premier League.
Speaking in the post-match discussion on Sky Sports (h/t The Express), O’Hara was adamant that the North London club would benefit from signing the midfielder in the upcoming transfer windows. He further mentioned the qualities that the Saints ace possesses and how it would suit the needs of the club.
“I’d love him at Tottenham! As I was saying to Leroy [Lita], he gives you 15 goal contributions a season. Whether it’s from penalties, free-kicks or set-pieces, he’s massive to have in your side. People say he’s just a set-piece specialist – he’s not. He’s good on the ball, he works hard, he’s got great energy and he’s a leader. I really like Ward-Prowse, I think he’s brilliant.”
Could Ward-Prowse join Spurs?
The Englishman has been splendid under the tenure of Ralph Hasenhuttl and has continued his performances from last season. He has made 19 appearances and has five goals and three assists to his name across all competitions this season.
O’Hara is right. Ward-Prowse is more than just a set-piece specialist. He is an able player in possession and keeps the ball ticking for the Saints in midfield. A central midfielder by trade, he knows how to help his team off the ball as well.
Similarly, the Italian manager has used Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp in a way where they play a part in our attacking build-up at times. A strong passer of the ball in such situations can help open up defences and find space. And Ward-Prowse can be that man to do it.

Players like Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele have fared well recently, but if they fail to build on that moving forward, we have to look at life past them. If we reach that stage, then replacements would have to be considered, and the Saints captain is not a bad option to have.
But then again, there is nothing regarding genuine interest from the club. One can only hope that the decision-makers at Spurs take note of O’Hara’s comments and consider a move for the rather underrated midfielder.
