What Tottenham Hotspur told Antonio Conte about his January transfer window budget
According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur have already given their stance on the January transfer budget made available to Antonio Conte during their first meeting that discussed potential signings. They are currently in a good position in Premier League but require some incomings to compete for Champions League qualification.
Spurs have conveyed to Conte that he will be handed a restricted budget to make signings in the winter transfer window. Their decision was the result of the incomings in the summer and what lies ahead for some of them in the future. It was the same meeting where Conte expressed the need for more time to assess the current squad.
Tottenham had previously announced that they had recorded an £80.2million pre-tax loss for the previous year. The pandemic caused by Covid has clearly harmed the club’s financials, which could have also played a part in Daniel Levy’s current stance.
Frustrating month ahead?
It would not fill us with any confidence, and we could be in for a frustrating month as our chances of competing for the Champions League places could be hampered by the lack of incomings. Asking the Italian manager to win trophies in the first season itself would not be right unless we are willing to back him when needed.
However, we have a great chance of competing for the Carabao Cup having already qualified for the semifinals. But some areas need to be addressed if we are serious about taking the next step in our development.
We especially need an addition in the frontline as we are lacking in that department. A right-back is also a must considering how Matt Doherty has fared, plus Emerson Royal has not hit the strides running so far. We could also overhaul our midfield and bring in players who have caught the 52-year-old boss’s fancy.

It remains to be seen how we would move in the transfer window this month, but we hope that there will be some activity in the coming days. If the budget is restricted, we should try to clear out some of the fringe players like Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli and invest that money elsewhere, which would be a much better prospect for us.
Having signed Conte, the onus is now on Daniel Levy to back his man when needed. It would be unfair to expect him to challenge for the top prizes while the club fails to keep their end of the bargain.
