Transfer News: Jose Mourinho eyeing shock reunion with Tottenham Hotspur star Tanguy Ndombele

According to transfer news on Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t ESPN), AS Roma are interested in luring out of favour Tottenham Hotspur star Tanguy Ndombele.

Tanguy Ndombele joined Spurs in 2019. The French midfielder was seeing regular minutes under former manager Jose Mourinho and the 25-year-old made a handsome 57 appearances across all competitions under the current Roma boss, which is his second-highest tally under any manager.

However, the scenario has changed rapidly after the departure of the Portuguese icon. Former manager Nuno Espírito Santo did not trust Ndombele towards the start of his reign and the situation has worsened for the midfielder under Antonio Conte. The 25-year-old has made five appearances under the Italian boss which amounts to only 174 minutes of game time

Ndombele is struggling to find game time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, Jose Mourinho could free him from the harrowing experience. It is believed that AS Roma are eyeing to sign the French international.

What next for Ndombele?

Antonio Conte has passed a difficult phase of his tenure in December as he used Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg and Oliver Skipp in midfield to successfully amass essential points. With the return of Giovani Lo Celso from injury, the former Inter Milan manager has the Argentine, along with Harry Winks, to provide competition for starts in the heart of Spurs’ midfield.

Conte has refused to rule out a move for Ndombele in a recent press conference and suggested that he would decide his future after a meeting with the club hierarchy about a transfer strategy for the ongoing window.

The situation is simple. If Conte believes things are not working out with Ndombele at N17, there is no point in keeping the former Lyon man on our books. But we must be wary of losing out on depth. While we may not have a dearth of midfielders right now, the recent Covid outbreak in our camp served as a reminder of how squad depth is important.

Antonio Conte has to play the cards in his hand properly. It wouldn’t be unwise to cut our losses on Ndombele and accept a handsome offer for him. But then, we must have an idea in place of what we plan on doing going forward.

Ndombele, after all, is an able player capable of creating magic when he is in the mood. A creative playmaker to replace him, if he were to leave Spurs, would certainly be something that would supplement Conte’s team while also ensuring we don’t weaken our squad in the process.
