Transfer News: Ajax are keen on Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn
According to De Telegraaf via Sport Witness (h/t Football.London), Ajax Amsterdam are keen to bring Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn back to the Netherlands.
Steven Bergwijn showed impressive performances in the last season and was set to become a regular in this term. However, injury issues have ravaged the Dutch starlet’s stay at the Lane and in turn, impacted his performances.
The 24-year-old has only made 13 appearances this season, including only three starts in the Premier League this season. While Bergwijn is excellent on his day, he is far too inconsistent to be considered a reliable option.
It is believed that Ajax are looking to bring the Spurs striker back to his home country and have ‘ramped up’ their pursuit recently. However, it seems Erik ten Hag’s side are eyeing to offload David Neres, who has attracted interest from several clubs, including Shakhtar Donetsk, to generate the required funds to land Bergwijn.
Tottenham currently lacks depth in the forward lineup. Even though Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Lucas Moura have played impressively in the last few matches, Antonio Conte will struggle to field all three players in every game for the remainder of the season.
Given the hectic schedule and Covid complications, it’s evident that top-notch athletes are struggling to maintain their fitness. Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising if any of Spurs’ key forwards are in need of a breather in the coming months. The Italian manager doesn’t have much backup to tackle such a situation and losing Bergwij will only make the job harder.
Tottenham signed Bryan Gil from Sevilla in the summer. But the Spaniard still hasn’t provided any consistent spell. Bergwijn for all his luggage is a match-winner on his day.

The Dutch striker could become a future star under the guidance of Antonio Conte. Therefore, any move involving the 24-year-old leaving the N-17 looks improbable. Ajax’s interest looks strong, but the North London team’s situation could see them rule out any offers being accepted.
