Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur to offer Matt Doherty in swap deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Adama Traore
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur are ready to offer Matt Doherty in a swap deal for the services of Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traore in the January transfer window. The latter was a target for them the previous summer, but the move was brought to a halt by his current club.
Tottenham eyed Traore as an option in the right wing-back position since they want more attacking quality in the final third. They think that Emerson Royal does not have the desired attacking abilities at the moment, which calls for the move. Doherty could be used as a makeweight where he could end up returning to his former club.
The 25-year-old will enter the final year of his contract at the end of this term, which has prompted Wolves to decide that they would be open to selling him this month. There have been no signs that he would sign an extension which adds further fuel to the fire. He is currently valued at £20million, and it could be brought down using the Irishman.
First signing in winter?
The idea of the Spaniard as a wing-back could be interesting as he has played in that role before. That means he could become a key player in that role if he is properly moulded to suit our needs.
Antonio Conte has done a similar task at his previous clubs- Ivan Perisic at Inter Milan and Victor Moses at Chelsea- so there is no reason to doubt that he cannot do the same at N17. We would also be getting rid of the Spurs outcast in the process as he has often looked like a shadow of the player he was at Molineux.
The Wolves ace’s lack of final product is well known throughout the league, which would be a downside in this case. His ability to beat players is a major asset to possess, but it’s not a secret that his final ball can use a bit of polishing up.
In such a case, we cannot expect to have a quick uplift in the quality on the right side as time would be needed to integrate the Spanish forward into our set-up. Royal is yet to fully adapt to the new league, having arrived at the start of this season.

The Brazilian has been underwhelming in the last few games, with his crosses being of little to no use for the team. Adding competition may well force him to do better and replicate what he had done at Real Betis. It remains to be seen whether this offer would come to fruition this month and if Traore could be our first addition of this year.
Moreover, Traore can double up as a potent attacking option and an impact sub considering his speed is tough for defenders to deal with. This is one deal to keep an eye on, and one which could ensure that we come out a stronger team once it is completed.
