Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte opens on Ajax’s interest in Steven Bergwijn
Antonio Conte has given his thoughts about Steven Bergwijn after being asked whether Tottenham Hotspur would sell him to Ajax Amsterdam. The forward was subjected to interest from the Dutch giants which prompted the question to be raised.
Supposedly, Tottenham had rejected an €18 million bid from the Dutch club for a transfer this month. Ajax are still interested in him and are preparing a second attempt with an improved offer for getting the services of the Dutchman.
Speaking in the pre-match presser (h/t Football.London), Conte has conveyed that Bergwin knows well about his thoughts while mentioning that the attacker is a “Tottenham player”. He added that the 24-year-old has a quality that no one else has in the squad, which makes him dependable.
“Honestly, Bergwijn he knows very well what I think about him. I consider him a player that can play in all three roles, as a number nine and as a number ten as well. For sure, Bergwijn is a Tottenham player and he’s very close to coming back. I count on him, also because he’s a player with different characteristics to Sonny, Lucas and then Harry. He’s very good in one on ones, he’s a creative player that we don’t have in our squad.”
Bergwijn to stay at Spurs?
Well, the thing is that the Italian coach did not straight-up rule out the Dutch international’s departure. Last month, he had delivered a verdict on Harry Winks with a clear message stating that the midfielder would stay at N17. Nothing was stopping him from doing the same his time around, which may tell us something.
But, it would be clutching at the last straws looking through that perspective since the former Inter Milan boss has expressed that the Tottenham star has a unique ability that others does not possess in the frontline. The manager also mentioned that he counts on the forward and appreciated his versatility.
In that sense, it is clear what the boss’ message is regarding the links, which also makes sense looking at the circumstances. It is not like we are blessed with options, and the injury to Son Heung-Min puts us in an even worse state. Bryan Gil cannot be fully counted on just yet, meaning we cannot afford to lose our depth.

The 52-year-old also revealed that he had a meeting with Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy discussing the potential transfers in the future. He mentioned that they know what needs to be done regarding the squad, and it is up to them to take the decision.
The hierarchy has to back the man in charge because he has already proven several times that with adequate support from the players and the board, success is attainable. We have to do the same and, our trophy drought makes it even more important for the right decision to be taken.
