Transfer News: Manchester United to challenge Tottenham Hotspur for Tariq Lamptey
According to Daily Mail Online (h/t ESPN), Manchester United have entered the race to sign Brighton and Hove Albion right-back Tariq Lamptey amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur. He has enjoyed a rapid rise to the top since joining the Seagulls in 2020.
Ralf Rangnick wants to reinforce the right-back position and increase competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot. Man United have accepted his demands and have registered their interest in Lamptey.
Brighton have named a price tag of £40million for the services of the 21-year-old. The Red Devils are unwilling to meet the asking price to facilitate a move. Arsenal are also keen on signing the youngster to bolster their rising squad under Mikel Arteta.
Beat our direct rivals!
The Chelsea academy graduate is one of the highly-rated fullbacks in the league, which has seen him attract the attention of several high profile clubs. We need someone who can give us more attacking quality in the right-wingback position, and Lamptey could be the right man for the job.
So we must not let our direct rivals get their hands on him as it would, in turn, affect us moving forward. The valuation of Graham Potter’s team is relatively cheap for someone who has not even reached his full potential yet.
Matt Doherty has been a failure since he joined Spurs from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Emerson Royal joined us ahead of this season but has also failed to make a case for himself. That calls for the need for additions in the right wingback spot, but it is up to the board to decide whether they will actively pursue the Brighton star.

Wing-backs are crucial for Antonio Conte and the Italian manager has often sued them to maximum effect at his previous clubs. We cannot ignore these issues for too long and must hand Conte the tools he needs to succeed.
The crossing from the wide-man has been mediocre in the past few games, which has simultaneously played a part in our slump. Conte himself confirmed the issue while demanding his fullbacks to do better moving forward. But that has not happened so far, indicating that we need someone like Lamptey in the squad. Time will tell how this situation will pan out in the coming days.
